  • Artist Aelbert Cuyp (1620-1691) from Dordrecht enjoys international fame and is popular for his landscapes bathed in golden mists. He is one of the most prominent landscape painters of the seventeenth century, but was not discovered abroad until the middle of the eighteenth century. There was even a true Cuyp mania in England. His work should not be missing in a country house!

Cuyp’s monumental cows, tranquil river views and harbors full of sailing ships had a major impact on British landscape painting. English master painters such as Thomas Gainsborough, John Constable and J.M.W. Turner were inspired by his paintings. In the light of Aelbert Cuyp the work of many artists are shown that are famous or lesser-known artists such as Richard Wilson, John Crome and Augustus Wall Callcott.

This book reveals remarkable facts about the significance of Aelbert Cuyp for British landscape art. It is a richly illustrated reference work that is the result of years of research by Dutch and British art historians. The exhibition of the same name in the Dordrechts Museum will take place from October 3 2021 to May 8th 2022.
