  • The French designer and architect Daniel Marot (1661-1752), who mostly lived and worked in the Dutch Republic, managed to make a prominent name for himself. Today still, he is praised for his comprehensive and multifaceted oeuvre, which, at the same time, has been subject to surprisingly little in-depth research. In this publication, which is the first ever book on Marot in the English language, no less than 36 royal palaces, castles and country houses will be discussed. Most of these are situated in the Netherlands, but Marot also worked on a number of locations in England, as well as Germany and Italy.

Daniel Marot had many distinguished commissioners, including King-Stadholder William III of Orange and his wife Queen Mary II Stuart, as well as some other prominent noble and high ranking families. He supplied designs for exteriors, interiors, individual objects and/or gardens, and for some of these he additionally oversaw their execution. In addition to the systematic examination of Marot’s designs for the selected locations, Marot’s life, career, and family relations will be assessed. The work of his son Jacob Marot will also be discussed.

By focussing on Daniel Marot’s designs for royal palaces, castles and country houses, this richly illustrated book, which depicts several designs by Marot that have never been published before, provides an important impetus to understanding the work of this prominent and fascinating artist.
